Julie Stoneman is a national award-winning landscape architect previously working with the City of Hobart and various private practices.
Upon graduating from QUT Grad Dip LA Julie was awarded the Paddy Behan Graduate Award in Landscape Architecture and in her first year of working at the City of Hobart Julie was awarded the Tasmanian/Victorian AILA Graduate Landscape Architect award.
Julie has extensive experience designing innovative public open spaces in a wide range of situations from large scale urban design projects such as the Long Beach Parklands/Seawall Project (Lower Sandy Bay, Tasmania), through to civic spaces such as the Victoria Cross Memorial at the Queens Domain which won AILA National & State Design Awards in 2004.
Julie has also designed various bushland visitor access infrastructure projects including the award-winning Western Viewing Deck at the Pinnacle kunanyi (Mt Wellington). The project also won the inaugural LGAT Green-space award.
The citation for the 2005 AILA (Tas) Design Award stated that the project -
‘superbly manifests a richly layered design concept that is at once sensitive yet robust, sculptural and functional. It is elegant and has an economy of form and detail. It also pays homage to its magnificent setting and broader contemporary and historical cultural context. Fine detailing and thoughtful use of recycled and natural materials result in an exemplary example of what can be achieved within a modest budget.’
Another award-winning project was the McRobies Gully Revegetation Plan which won the
2004 AILA Tasmanian State Environment Award. The citation for this project stated that -
‘This project demonstrated clearly an interdisciplinary response to a highly emotive and contentious site, Hobart Tip located on the edge of the city and on the edge of Hobart’s majestic Mount Wellington Range. The creative use of the firewalls linear planting strips to gain height from the re-vegetation was well resolved. This project exhibits in depth planning and a willingness to undertake experimental growing trials in order to achieve successful and economical future planting outcomes. The final species selection will be tried and proven and selected from local endemic species, thus allowing tonal blending and visual amelioration of the site. This project provides a refreshingly simple response to a difficult task whilst engaging in sustainable practices.’
“Julie infuses her visual arts background into her landscape architecture practice bringing a vibrant approach to her designs. Julies’ extensive projects include award winning civic landscapes and environmental master plans that display excellence through a considered and sensitive design process. Julie creates unique places by endeavouring to amplify a powerful sense of place”
